What if?
all the clamour dropped out.
Those speaking outside
and that constant murmur within,
telling you what to do,
shaping what you should think.
What if
one day, you stood still
and you looked around,
saw that it is beautiful,
felt joy flow as a spring.
What if
you danced through light,
breathed the sweet earth.
Would you give up the struggle
and as those who beat the drums most fear
find peace and cease
your little wars?
If all your striving ended
would you be idle, dissolute
or would you discover the conjunction of work and play,
that freedom is real,
and happiness a raft that floats?
Your life a candle celebrating,
warming those around you.
